Office 365 is now Microsoft 365

Posted on: 21st April, 2020

Microsoft today changed the name of Office 365 to the more anonymous Microsoft 365. But, that’s about it. Just a change of name. For now.

The change has come about in order for Microsoft to be able to offer more than just the extensive suite of Office products, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.

Whichever version of Office 365 that you currently subscribe to will remain the same, albeit under a new name. The price won’t change either.

Office 365 is now Microsoft 365

So, why have they done this?

Mostly in order to be able to offer much more than just Office within one subscription.

For instance, Microsoft will introduce Tech Support for Windows 10, via chat or phone, for subscribers at no additional cost.

Which is great for users, perhaps not so good for Computer Support companies!

Other additional features will include “partner offers”, which would include such things as a free 3 month membership of Adobe Creative Cloud software, which includes PhotoShop.

Microsoft Teams has been upgraded and will be included for Home Users, (it is already available on the Business versions of Office Microsoft 365.) It is actually already available as a free download at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app

Obviously this could be a real boon during the Coronavirus pandemic and LockDown, with so many video calls now being made across the world, and even to the neighbours next door.

Also, Microsoft Family Safety will be bundled into Microsoft 365. This allows members of the same family to be able, if they wish, to track each other’s phones; see what speed they may be driving at; or to track web usage of your kids with content filtering, time limits, etc.

So, more than just a name change, eventually.

Further information is available from Microsoft at https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/microsoft-365-for-existing-subscribers.

We expect most of the additional features to be introduced during 2020, so watch this space.
